ICYMI: November 2021

In case you missed it is a monthly round-up of what we have been up to at ACEVO. Communications officer Heloisa Righetto shares links to recently published content, newly launched events and services available to members.

News from ACEVO

We’ve shown during the pandemic that by working together, charities and civil society were able to help hold society together by delivering vital services during incredibly difficult times. We are happy to announce that this work will continue beyond the pandemic, with the launch of The Civil Society Group, an informal collaboration of organisations representing members and groups from across the charity sector and wider civil society. The Civil Society Group will increase collaboration between the infrastructure, representative and member organisations working across our sector. It aims to harness the collective strengths of our diverse networks, improve efficiency and effectiveness, and allow civil society to clearly articulate shared priorities and views to government, and streamline and enhance our sector’s engagement with decision-makers.

In this special episode of our podcast, three of ACEVO’s climate working group members talk about what they have been doing to tackle the climate emergency at their organisations. You will hear from Emma Gibson, director of London Travel Watch, Janet Thorne, CEO of Reach Volunteering, and Gus Alston, CEO of the Stonegrove Community Trust, about their first steps, challenges and motivation to get the work started. This and all previous episodes of the podcast are available on the website and all major podcast providers.

The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill includes major government proposals on crime and justice in England and Wales. ACEVO and many other organisations across civil society have concerns about the contents of the bill. The Police Bill Alliance is primarily working to influence parts three and four of the bill, which contains proposals that would infringe on democracy and discriminate against minoritised groups. This blog outlines some of the critical issues, and you can read more detailed briefings on the Police Bill Alliance’s website about the impacts on specific communities.

Dealing with a statutory inquiry – the most serious form of regulatory action conducted by the Charity Commission – is a hugely stressful situation for charity CEOs. ACEVO has produced a member briefing to support chief executives who are, or may be, facing a statutory inquiry. Based on conversations with ACEVO members and professional advisors about their personal experiences of being involved in a statutory inquiry, the briefing aims to explain the process and offer practical, accessible, plain-English advice to CEOs on how to work with trustees and the Commission to achieve the best possible outcome.
