“Stepping into my first CEO role was pretty daunting. Doing so as we entered another major lockdown in January 2021 added a whole other level of complexity – getting to know my team, understanding the nuances of information people were sharing with me as well as meeting the students we support – whilst doing it via Zoom was tough!” In this blog, Fiona Ellison, director at the Unite Foundation, reflects on the importance of having a circle of sector friends and shares a few tips on what has helped her to build this community.

“There is a bit of fear of the unknown, excitement and a real feeling of anticipation for myself and for WIP. There’s a sense of responsibility to make everything as good as it can be (…), but also acceptance that part of being a CEO is that your job is never done”. As she prepares to leave Women in Prison, chief executive Dr Kate Paradine shares on this blog how she has been feeling, and some of the things she has been doing, in preparation for the next step – both hers and the organisation.

Announced new events

The countdown to #ACEVOFest22 has started! Join us in September for a three-day hybrid leadership festival: you can choose to attend day one (20 September) online or in person, and days two and three (27 and 28 September) will be fully online. The programme is now live on the website, so you can find out more about the sessions. You can attend as many sessions as you’d like with just one ticket. Please make sure you are logged in to access your member discount.

Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) are partnerships of organisations that come together to plan and deliver joined up health and care services, and to improve the lives of people who live and work in their area. With the passing of the Health and Social Care Act in April 2022, ICSs will have a statutory footing from 1 July 2022, when Integrated Care Boards will replace Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). Join us on 19 July from 2-3pm to hear from Ross Clark, partner with leading health, social care and charity law firm Hempsons, who will give an overview of the ICS structure and the opportunities for voluntary organisations.

Round off the month with an informal gathering of leaders to check in with one another and share learning. This one-hour get-together via Zoom, hosted by ACEVO’s head of member support, Tom Andrews, is a space to pause, reflect and connect. You can now book your place at the next one on 29 July from 4-5pm.
