ACEVO accessibility statement

This accessibility statement applies to the website acevo.org.uk.

This website is run by ACEVO. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible. You can see a full list of any issues we currently know about in the Non-accessible content section of this statement.

ACEVO is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some controls used to complete bookings for event places are not keyboard accessible and will stop users from being able to book. This fails WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard (A).

When viewed at 150% magnification or above, the menu is replaced with a ‘burger’ style menu. This menu is not accessible to keyboard users. This fails WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard (A).

The cookie banner is presented as the last navigable element on the page. This can be disruptive for some users. This fails WCAG 2.4.3 Focus Order (A).

The skip to content link on the website is present but does not receive visible focus. This fails WCAG 2.4.1 Bypass blocks (A).

The search icon does not receive focus indication. This fails WCAG 2.4.7 Focus Visible (A).

Across the website there are various pieces of video content that do not have appropriate captions, audio descriptions or transcriptions. Some of these are exempt under the regulations but others are within scope. These fail WCAG 1.2.2 Captions (A), 1.2.3 Audio Descriptions and Media Alternatives (A), and 1.2.5 Audio Descriptions (AA).

Badges present within the footer do not have consistent alt text. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content (A).

Across the website there are instances of buttons and links being visually identical and performing the same function. This is an incorrect use of these elements. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (A).

Across the website there are a variety of contrast failures due to a combination of white and pale green colour use. These fails WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast Minimum (AA).

All pages across the website contain various HTML validation errors. This fails WCAG 4.1.1 Parsing (A).

Across the website there are various image alt failures, whether this be logos or other images such as staff photos that do not have alt text, are not marked as decorative or otherwise their alt text is not a suitable description. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content (A). Some also fail WCAG 1.4.5 Images of Text (AA).

Some images across the website are used as links. These image links do not have appropriate associated link text. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content (A) and 2.4.4 Link Purpose (A).

The twitter widget on the home page presents a number of issues including link descriptions, contrast and ARIA usage. This fails WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast Minimum (AA), 2.4.4 Link Purpose (A), and 4.1.2 Name, Role Value (A).

Across the website there are a variety of links that are not described in a useful way. This includes click here links and other non-descriptive link text. This fails WCAG 2.4.4 Link Purpose (A).

Submitting a CEO in crisis form may be confusing for some users. The submit button to complete the form is presented before the form, not at the end. This fails WCAG 1.3.2 Meaningful Sequence (A) and 2.4.3 Focus Order (A).

Podcasts and past webinars are available on the website. The podcast player and webinars present a number of issues with iframes and button control roles. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (A).

When booking events, navigating the page may not be in the order expected. Users will encounter a calendar menu before moving through the normal navigation menu. This fails WCAG 2.4.3 Focus Order (A).

Newsletter issues

Newsletters contain contrast issues where light grey text is used against white backgrounds. This fails WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast Minimum (AA).

Newsletters have some issues with links either being presented with identical link text or not working in plaintext views. These fail WCAG 2.4.4 Link Purpose (A) and 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (A).

If you find an issue that we have yet to identify, please contact us using one of the routes described in the ‘Reporting accessibility problems with this website’ section of this statement.

Disproportionate burden

At this time, we have made no claims of disproportionate burden.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

3rd party content

Some of our services include third party content which we have no control over such as documents which are sent to us and uploaded as part of our corporate parners’ services, or comments left on blog pages by members of the public. The accessibility regulations do not require us to manage these kinds of content, but if you have a problem with any of the content hosted on this website, please contact us using the methods above and we will try to help.

Video content

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations. We also have some existing pre-recorded video content that was published before the 23rd September 2020. This content is also exempt from the regulations. All new video content we produce will have appropriate captions, and/or audio descriptions and/or transcripts as necessary.

Online Maps

Our service includes the use of online maps to show certain geographical information. These are not used for navigational purposes and are exempt under the regulations. If you require the information presented in an online map in a different format, please contact us to discuss reasonable adjustments.

Archive content

Some of the content in the resources part of the website is classified as an archive. This kind of historically recorded content is exempt from meeting the digital accessibility regulations. If you require a specific piece of archive content and it is not accessible, please contact us using the methods above and we will provide an accessible version of the content on request.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

ACEVO is liaising with our web developer to fix the most pressing issues. Some of these issues can be delt with in-house, by the Communications & Content Lead. These will be prioritised.  Other issues are likely to need investment, and depend on external providers.
