The power of action learning sets: forging peer networks in the isolated realm of non-profit CEOs

The journey of a CEO can often feel isolating, as the burden of decision-making and leadership often falls solely on your shoulders. In this blog, executive coach Gary Buxton explores the concept of action learning sets and how they can be a vital source of support and wellbeing for non-profit CEOs.

The isolated role of a non-profit CEO

The role of a non-profit CEO is multifaceted and demanding, often requiring you to balance strategic planning, financial management, team development, and stakeholder engagement. Being at the helm of an organisation can lead to a sense of isolation, as you may hesitate to share your concerns or vulnerabilities with your team or board members. This can result in feelings of loneliness and stress, impacting your overall well-being and decision-making capabilities.

Beyond transactional conversations

Traditional networks and professional relationships can be limited to transactional conversations focused on business matters. While such discussions are crucial for operational effectiveness, they may lack the emotional and personal support essential for your well-being as a leader. Action learning sets offer a unique and effective alternative, providing a safe and supportive space for non-profit CEOs to share, learn, and grow together.

What are action learning sets?

Action learning sets (ALS) are small, confidential peer groups that come together regularly to tackle individual challenges and opportunities. Reg Revans developed the concept in the 1940s and has since been adopted by various industries and professions, including the non-profit sector. ALS focuses on the power of collective wisdom and reflective learning to address real-world problems faced by each member.

The benefits of action learning sets

Empathy and understanding

Within an ALS, you will be surrounded by peers who understand the unique challenges of leading a non-profit organisation. This empathetic environment allows you to express your thoughts, fears and struggles without judgment, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Diverse perspectives

ALS typically consist of CEOs from different non-profit sectors and backgrounds. This diversity of perspectives brings fresh insights and creative solutions to the table, helping you break free from tunnel vision and approach problems from new angles.

Problem-solving and learning

Through structured discussions, ALS enables non-profit CEOs to delve into each other’s challenges. This collective problem-solving approach provides practical solutions and instils a continuous learning mindset among the participants.

Enhanced decision making

As a CEO, the decisions you make can have far-reaching consequences for your organisation. Having a trusted group of peers to bounce ideas off can lead to more well-informed and confident decision-making.

Personal growth and support

The personal development aspect of ALS is equally valuable. Engaging in reflective practices and receiving feedback from peers helps you identify blind spots, work on leadership skills, and develop a growth-oriented mindset.

Confidentiality and trust

ALS operates under strict confidentiality, creating a safe space for open and honest discussions. The trust built within the group allows for vulnerability and deeper connections among members.

New ALS cohorts

Gary Buxton, in collaboration with ACEVO, will be launching a new monthly action learning set programme starting November 2023.

By becoming a part of this action learning set, you will gain access to a supportive community of like-minded peers who understand the challenges unique to non-profit leadership. Each group remains consistent over the six months to maximise trust, support and collaboration. Through open and confidential discussions, you can share your concerns, seek guidance, and collaborate on finding innovative solutions to real-world problems.

This monthly gathering will provide a safe space to foster learning, enhance decision-making, and promote your overall well-being. Together, we will explore the power of collective wisdom and reflective learning to empower you in leading your organisation towards greater success and impact.
