Policy round-up: May 2024

This month’s policy roundup aims to give you a taste into what the policy and influencing team has been up to over the past month.

By Shareen Patel, policy and influencing officer at ACEVO.

Home Truths 2 – Race Equity Series

We have now launched the ‘Race Equity Series’ as part of our Home Truths 2 programme of work. This is a series of free online events and is open to all in civil society. You will have the opportunity to explore new insights, share challenges and ideas, engage with expert guest speakers and support transformative change.

The first session – Why we need to move beyond diversity – is taking place on Wednesday 12 June 14:00-15:00. It will offer practical insights, actionable strategies and mentorship to promote organisational change with equity, inclusion and anti-racist principles at the heart of advocacy. Speakers include Sanjiv Lingayah (director of Reframing Race, researcher and Home Truths 2 Race Equity Lead) and Lena Bheeroo (anti-racism and equity manager at Bond).

The following sessions as part of this series will cover reporting and responding to ethnic pay disparities, intersectionality and race equity, incorporating race equity into organisational mission, and reporting racism in mainstream civil society.

Climate crisis member meeting

We are holding our next online climate crisis member meeting on Tuesday 23 July, 14:00-15:00. Our guest speaker is Nick Gardner, Head of Climate Action at The National Lottery Community Fund who is responsible for delivering the £100m Climate Action Fund. Book your place to attend.

Charity Commission – charity trustees and decision-making

We have published a member briefing on the Charity Commission’s guidance surrounding charity trustees and decision making. The guidance matters to charity chief executives as it offers guidance and standards for operating your organisations effectively. Taking it to your board can help create an environment of transparency, accountability, and good governance.

Artificial intelligence

We have published a blog on AI and governance following the Charity Commission’s own blog on AI. The Commission states that charities should remain mindful of the risks inherent to the use of AI and its implications for decision making.

Book your place to join us online on Wednesday 22 May 11:00-12:00pm for our ‘Digital innovation and the potential of AI’ webinar to hear from Aidan Forman (Director of Technology RNIB) and Helena Sans (Head of TMT, Barclays Corporate) who will be looking at the digital journey charities are undertaking.

Campaigning

Bates Wells is holding an online webinar on campaigning in the run up to the next general election to discuss registering with the Electoral Commission to run a campaign, how to navigate staff standing for election, and how much responsibility trustees and boards must take for monitoring people’s personal accounts. Register to attend.
